About Magna Virium Historical Atlas

Wikipedia + Google Maps for history — built one historical place at a time.

Magna Virium Historical Atlas turns historical research into a navigable atlas: every castle, fortress and walled city is mapped, dated, classified by style and type, and cross-linked to its neighbours and its century. The same underlying data powers our educational products — starting with the coloring book Stone Giants of Europe.

Where the facts come from

Entries are compiled from public-domain and common historical knowledge, then written in plain language for readers of every age. Dates for older sites are necessarily approximate and are marked accordingly on the timeline.

The open dataset

We publish the structured castle data — 30 sites with coordinates, country, century, style and type — as a free download for teachers, researchers and developers.
