Culzean Castle was remodelled by the architect Robert Adam between 1777 and 1792 for the Earls of Cassillis, perched on an Ayrshire cliff. Famous for its oval staircase and round drawing room, it later gave General Eisenhower a Scottish apartment in thanks for his wartime role.

Culzean Castle
A castle on the cliff edge
On the coast of Ayrshire, in the south-west of Scotland, a great pale castle stands right at the brink of a sea cliff. Below it the waves of the Firth of Clyde crash on the rocks, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the island of Arran and the great rock of Ailsa Craig. This is Culzean (say it "cull-AYN"), one of the most elegant castles in the country.
Culzean looks like a medieval fortress, with round towers and battlements. But it is really a grand mansion in disguise, built in the 1700s to look romantic and dramatic against the sky and the sea.
The work of Robert Adam
Culzean is famous above all as the masterpiece of Robert Adam, the most celebrated Scottish architect of his age. Between 1777 and 1792 Adam transformed an older castle for David Kennedy, the 10th Earl of Cassillis, into the building we see today.
Adam was a genius at making buildings feel both grand and graceful. Inside Culzean he created two breathtaking spaces: the Oval Staircase, a sweeping stair lit from above and ringed with columns, and the Round Drawing Room, a beautiful circular room whose windows look straight out over the sea. He even designed an armoury whose walls are covered with patterns made from hundreds of swords and pistols.
A gift to a famous general
In 1945 the Kennedy family gave Culzean to the National Trust for Scotland so that everyone could enjoy it. As part of the gift, the top floor of the castle was set aside as an apartment for General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the American commander who had led the Allied armies in the Second World War. It was a thank-you from the people of Scotland.
Eisenhower, who later became President of the United States, stayed at Culzean several times. Today that apartment still bears his name, and it can be visited or even stayed in.
Castle and country park
Around the castle spreads a huge country park — the first in Scotland — with woodland walks, a walled garden, ponds, a deer park and paths down to the rocky shore. There are caves beneath the cliffs, said in old tales to have been used by smugglers landing their goods in secret.
Culzean is a castle built not for war but for beauty and comfort, perfectly placed where green parkland meets the wild sea. It shows how, by the eighteenth century, Scotland's lords wanted homes that looked like ancient castles but were filled with light, art and elegance.
