Frankenstein Castle
A castle with a famous name
On a wooded hilltop above the city of Darmstadt, in the German state of Hesse, stand the romantic ruins of Frankenstein Castle. The name alone is enough to send a shiver down the spine, thanks to one of the most famous monster stories ever written — and although the castle's link to that tale is more legend than proven history, it has made Frankenstein one of the most intriguing ruins in Germany.
A medieval stronghold
The castle was built around 1250 by a local noble family who took their name from it, becoming the lords "von Frankenstein". For centuries the castle guarded the region and served as the family's seat. The name "Frankenstein" simply means "Stone (or castle) of the Franks", referring to the Germanic people of the area — nothing to do with monsters.
Over the centuries the family's importance faded, the castle changed hands, and eventually it fell into ruin, leaving the towers and walls that crown the hill today.
The alchemist and the legend
The castle's spooky reputation owes much to a real person: Johann Conrad Dippel, an alchemist and scientist born at Frankenstein Castle in the 1600s. Dippel carried out strange experiments and was rumoured — probably unfairly — to have done gruesome things in his search for the secrets of life. Such tales gave the castle an eerie reputation.
Whether the English author Mary Shelley knew of Frankenstein Castle or Dippel when she wrote her famous novel Frankenstein in 1818 is much debated, and there is no firm proof of a connection. But the coincidence of the name and the legends has linked the castle forever, in the popular imagination, to the story of the scientist who created a monster.
A place of legends
Frankenstein Castle has gathered other legends too, including tales of a brave knight who slew a dragon on the hill, and stories of ghosts and strange happenings among the ruins. These spooky associations have made the castle a place of fascination, especially for those who love a good scary story.
Germany's Halloween castle
In modern times, Frankenstein Castle has embraced its eerie fame. Each autumn it hosts one of the largest and most famous Halloween festivals in Germany, when the ruins are filled with costumes, monsters and spooky fun. The tradition is said to have been started by American soldiers stationed nearby, and it has grown into a major event.

Visitors can climb the wooded hill to explore the romantic ruins, enjoy views over Darmstadt and the Rhine plain, and — at the right time of year — join the famous Halloween celebrations.
