Lichtenstein Castle

A fairytale on a cliff edge

In the Swabian Alps of southern Germany, a tiny, perfect castle clings to the very edge of a sheer rock cliff, its slender tower and pointed roofs rising against the sky. This is Lichtenstein Castle — often called the "fairytale castle of Württemberg" — and with its dizzying perch and storybook looks, it is one of the most charming small castles in all of Germany.

Inspired by a novel

Lichtenstein Castle owes its existence to a book. In 1826 a German writer, Wilhelm Hauff, published a romantic novel called Lichtenstein, set in the Middle Ages and named after an old ruined castle that had once stood nearby. The novel became hugely popular and filled readers with longing for the romance of the medieval past.

One of those readers was Duke Wilhelm of Urach, a member of the royal family of Württemberg, who was so captivated that he decided to build a real castle to match the romantic vision in the book. Between 1840 and 1842 he had Lichtenstein Castle built on the dramatic clifftop, in the Gothic-revival style, complete with towers, battlements and a drawbridge.

A castle of the imagination

Lichtenstein is not an ancient fortress but a 19th-century romantic dream — yet it was built with real care to look and feel medieval, and it stands on a site with genuine old history. Inside, it is filled with medieval-style furnishings, armour, weapons and stained glass, gathered by the duke to complete the fantasy.

Small and intimate, the castle feels like stepping into the pages of a romantic tale, exactly as its builder intended.

A dizzying setting

Part of Lichtenstein's magic is its breathtaking position, right on the lip of a cliff with a sheer drop below. A small bridge crosses a gap in the rock to reach the castle gate, adding to the sense of a fairytale stronghold. From the castle and its viewpoints, visitors look out over forests and valleys far below.

The surrounding area, with its woods, caves and walking trails, makes the castle a popular destination for day-trippers and lovers of romantic scenery.

Still in the family

Lichtenstein Castle remains owned by the noble family that built it, and it is carefully cared for and opened to visitors. This continuity gives it a warm, lived-in feeling, and its romantic story — born from a novel and built out of love for the medieval past — makes it especially endearing.

Visiting today

Visitors can cross the little bridge to tour the castle's medieval-style rooms, see its collections of arms and armour, and enjoy the spectacular clifftop views over the Swabian Alps. Small, perfect and impossibly romantic, Lichtenstein Castle is a true fairytale castle — proof that a great story can leap from the page and become stone and tower on a German cliff.
